Akhir-akhir ini, lImuwan berhasil mengungkap isi enam peti mati Mesir Kuno yang terkubur selama ribuan tahun. Para ilmuwan menggunakan teknologi khusus demi melihat isi di dalam peti tanpa membukanya.
Usai pemindaian, peneliti menemukan sejumlah sisa mumi dari beberapa hewan, termasuk tengkorak kadal yang utuh. Peti mati berukuran panjang sekitar 50 milimeter hingga 300 milimeter dan diperkirakan berasal dari 664 SM hingga 250 SM.

Pada awalnya mereka ditemukan dalam penggalian di kota kuno Naukratis dan Tel el-Yehudiyeh pada 1885. Keenam peti dibuat dengan tembaga berbentuk kadal, belut, dan ular kobra. Sebagaimana dikutip dari Live Science, para peneliti menggunakan teknologi yang disebut tomografi neutron untuk melihat isi dalamnya.
Hal ini dikarenakan peti masih tersegel dan terbuat dari tembaga.”Karena kotak ini terbuat dari logam, sangat sulit melihatnya dengan sinar-X. Jadi yang dapat kami lakukan dengan penelitian ini adalah melihat ke dalam sekelompok kecil peti mati menggunakan neutron,” kata ilmuwan pencitraan sinar-X di British Museum, Daniel O’Flynn.
Pada peti ditemukan tengkorak kadal lengkap, mirip spesies kadal dinding. Sementara dua peti lainnya dipenuhi pecahan tulang binatang yang telah dibungkus mirip kain linen. Selain tulang, peneliti juga menemukan timah di tiga peti mati yang diduga sebagai pemberat saat proses penguburannya.

Selain itu di bagian luar dari beberapa kotak juga terlihat ditempel dengan loop demi mempermudah menggantungnya di dinding kuil selama prosesi keagamaan. Peneliti pun tidak mengetahui secara pasti apakah hewan-hewan itu dulunya untuk dikorbankan atau tidak.
“Mungkin saja mereka dikorbankan, tetapi mereka juga bisa menjadi persembahan kepada para dewa,” ujar O’Flynn.
